Lighting builds on an understanding of the basic structure of form and introduces rendering. This course explores light sources, types of light and their effects on the surfaces of a model. Taught by Yaser Khanbaray across 15 lessons in 4 sections, it progresses step by step from tools and tonal values to rendering complex forms. The aim is to combine an understanding of light and shadow with structure, enabling more informed decisions in drawing and creative practice.

Understanding the Course and Learning Approach
Who Is This Course For?
For students who understand the basic structure of form and want to deepen their understanding of light, shadow and tonal values in drawing, from simple surfaces to organic and complex forms.Teaching Approach
The course begins with tools and tonal values, moves on to light and surfaces, then develops final rendering through three-, five- and seven-value studies. Why Study Light After Structure?
Understanding structure helps us understand volume. This course examines how a light source and changes in illumination affect the surfaces of a solid form and make its volume easier to read. From Tonal Values to Rendering
Practice progresses from organising light and dark values to a more fully developed rendering of form, working with hard surfaces, organic forms, hatching and gradients. What Will You Practise?
- Light sources and the terminology of light and shadow
- Tonal values and drawing with three, five and seven values
- Rendering hard surfaces and organic forms with hatching and gradients
- Rendering structural and complex forms through to completion
